South China Sea Fengyun Forum held in Haikou,China
The Fourth South China Sea Fengyun Forum, jointly organized by Hainan Provincial Meteorological Bureau, the Hainan Association of Meteorology and the Hainan Provincial Key Laboratory of South China Sea Meteorological Disaster Prevention and Reduction, was held in Haikou City, Hainan Province on December 16, 2014.

Academician Ding Yihui of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, Academician Wang Huijun of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and over 100 meteorologists jointly discussed the disastrous weather and climate in the South China Sea, such as tropical cyclones and monsoon activities in the South China Sea, and the scientific research achievements in related fields.

The South China Sea Fengyun Forum, which was founded by Hainan Provincial Meteorological Bureau, is an open academic exchange platform focusing on the tropical meteorology of the South China Sea.

The theme of this forum is meteorological disasters in the South China Sea.
Academician Ding Yihui, Academician Wang Huijun, and Professor Zhou Zhongdao were specially invited to respectively give speeches “Climate Change and South China Sea Meteorological Disasters”, “Progress and Problems on Short-term Climate Prediction,” and “Scientific Design and Research Achievements of Southwest Monsoon Experiment.” In addition, experts mainly from Taiwan University, Shanghai Typhoon Institute, the Beijing Institute of Urban Meteorology, and the South China Sea Institute of Oceanology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences presented the latest research results in tropical cyclone observation experiments, the forming and development of mesoscale convective vortex, and changes in wind energy in the South China Sea. Also, experts from the National Meteorological Center of CMA, Hainan Meteorological Observatory and Guangxi Meteorological Observatory reported on the intensity reanalysis and existing problems concerning Super Typhoon Rammasun, the effect of the ocean warm vortex on rapidly intensifying of typhoons and research findings of the forecasting techniques. Also, the forum proceedings included 52 papers related to meteorological disasters, such as typhoons and heavy rains, in the South China Sea.

With the introduction of the national strategic initiative of the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road, the political and economic status of the South China Sea has been further enhanced, and the demand for meteorological support in the South China Sea has gradually increased. The South China Sea meteorology has become the focus of Hainan meteorological science and technology exchanges and cooperation. In recent years, supported by Hainan Provincial Meteorological Bureau, the Hainan Provincial Key Laboratory of South China Sea Meteorological Disaster Prevention and Reduction has been established in Hainan Province, a key laboratory open fund project has been founded, and a team for the South China Sea meteorological science and technology has been built, so as to improve the meteorological support and services in the South China Sea based on technological innovation. In addition, the forum was held with the support and guidance of Hainan Provincial Foreign Affairs Office, the Hainan Provincial Association for Science and Technology and other local government departments and social groups. Moreover, the participation of the units such as GSD Satellite Ground Station, the Meteorological Office of Wenchang Spacecraft Launch Base Headquarters, and the Hainan Branch of the Air Traffic Management Bureau of CAAC, has promoted cross-sectoral and cross-industry exchanges and cooperation.
