The Third in 2013
South China Sea Fengyun Forum held in Sanya,China
The Third South China Sea Fengyun Forum was co-organized by Hainan Meteorology Administration, Hainan Meteorological Society and Hainan Key Laboratory of Meteorological Disaster Prevent on and Reduction of South China Sea. It was held in Sanya City, Hainan Province on November 29th, 2013.

The theme of the Forum 2013 was “Weather and Climate Research; Technologies of Forecasting and Prediction Concerning Tropical Cyclones, Monsoon Activities and the Like in the South China Sea; and Relevant Scientific Research Achievements”.

Academician Xu Xiangde from Chinese Academy of Meteorological Sciences, Prof. Wang Dongxiao from the South China Sea Institute of Oceanology, the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and Prof. Wan Qilin from the Guangzhou Institute of Tropical and Marine Meteorology were specially invited to give speeches on the typhoon track and effect of typhoon structural changes, the South China Sea SST and its effect on regional climate. They showed the progress of frontier research in atmospheric science, and the trends a of tropical ocean research in China. Also, Dr. Cheng Cho-ming from Hong Kong Observatory, which is renowned in meteorological services, was specially invited to give a speech on severe weather emergency services.

Over 80 meteorologists and scientific workers attended the forum, who are mainly from the Chinese Academy of Meteorological Sciences, the South China Sea Institute of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Shanghai Typhoon Institute, the Guangzhou Institute of Tropical and Marine Meteorology , the Chengdu Institute of Plateau Meteorology, the Anhui Institute of Meteorological Science and Research, the Shandong Institute of Meteorological Science and Research, the Meteorological Station of CNOOC Information Technology Co., Ltd., and meteorological bureaus in Guangdong, Guangxi, Fujian, Zhejiang, Shandong, Hebei, Liaoning, Heilongjiang, Sichuan and Guizhou.

The South China Sea Fengyun Forum, which was founded by Hainan Meteorology Administration in 2011, is an academic activity focusing on the tropical meteorology of the South China Sea. The forum aims to bring together meteorological workers to pay attention to the South China Sea and to Hainan, the island province with the largest ocean area in China, and to discuss the formation mechanism of the meteorological disasters in the South China Sea and the scientific problems in the forecasting. Through this platform, under the academic exchange concept of “openness, communication, and cooperation”, relevant development and improvement relying on communication, science, and technology can be achieved. Also, with this forum, Hainan Meteorology Administration aims to further strengthen the meteorological academic exchanges, accumulate the research results of weather and climate in the South China Sea, promote the development of Hainan Key Laboratory of Meteorological Disaster Prevent on and Reduction of South China Sea, improve the techniques for forecasting and predicting the severe weather in the South China Sea, and enhance Hainan’s abilities of natural disaster prevention and mitigation.
