Hainan Meteorology Administration held the First South China Sea Meteorological Forum in Haikou, China, on December 22–24, 2011. The Forum is aimed for academic exchanges of weather and climate research, forecasting and prediction technologies, and other relevant scientific research achievements on heavy rains in autumn, heavy rainfall in the tropics, and monsoon activities, etc.

The Forum gathered nearly 70 participants including representatives from Hainan and experts from Beijing, Guangdong, Guangxi, Hong Kong, Shanghai, Liaoning and beyond. Wang Chunyi, director of Hainan Meteorology Administration, attended the forum and delivered a speech. Also, Prof. Ni Yunqi and Prof. Wang Donghai from the Chinese Academy of Meteorological Sciences and other experts were invited to give speeches.

From September 30th to October 8th, 2010, Hainan suffered the largest torrential rain in history, and broke the longest torrential rain days since Hainan’s meteorological record in 1951, which caused enormous losses to local economy and people's lives and property. The Forum provided a timely platform to discuss these topics.

The forum received a total of 46 papers from domestic research institutes, colleges, and universities, as well as meteorological research and service departments, of which 20 papers were presented at the forum, covering disastrous weather, climate change, impacts of monsoon activities, analysis of continuous torrential rains, and so on.
